Language Immersion Program

I was hired to make two trailers for the pilot of a new language immersion program. Prugraman Sinipok was launching a program to help preserve the CHamoru culture and language among locals and diaspora. I’m honored to play a part in the preservation of history and culture in the place I was born and raised.

Roles: Cinematographer, Director, Editor

Purpose

  • Showcase the Language Immersion program for the CHamoru people of Guam and those living abroad.

  • Help the CHamoru diaspora reconnect with their roots and preserve the language.

  • Capture the emotional and cultural significance of the program.

Concept Development

The concept was to create two trailers for the program. One would be narrative and focus on the experiences of the first participants while the second would be more of a highlight and just focus on the most engaging parts. It was essentially shooting once and cutting twice.

Visual & Aesthetic Choices

  • A documentary-style approach with natural light and intimate footage.

  • Emphasis on close-up shots of participants and the beauty of the landscape.

  • Rugged terrain and natural environments to reflect both the challenges and cultural richness.

Production Decisions

Filming Location: Culturally significant locations across Guam, including hiking to Fouha Rock, Weaving Classes, and other historic locations.

  • Equipment: Lightweight and portable gear for filming in challenging environments.

  • Crew Size: Solo production with one grip—served as videographer/cinematographer, director and editor.

Creative Challenges

  • Environment: Navigating the difficult terrain while ensuring the safety of crew and equipment.

  • Balancing Narrative and Cultural Sensitivity: Representing the program's cultural significance while creating a cinematic experience.

  • Time Constraints: Limited timeframe for capturing all necessary shots while respecting the program's schedule.

  • Dynamic Environment: Besides the main event for the day, interviews, and some direction from me here and there, most of what was being captured was candid. I had to constantly keep my eye out for shots I needed while keeping my intrusion to a minimum and their immersion at max.

Reflection

  • Reinforced the importance of flexibility and planning in remote location filming.

  • Learned to balance storytelling with cultural representation.

  • Developed skills in managing a production from start to finish under tight constraints.

  • Knowing when to direct and when to observe
